I instantly felt many things &#8211; shock, concern, and even some offence. And I thought, <i>Is this conversation really happening in Canada?<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>My mind Is filled with many concerns and questions.<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>We know about the devasting <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/ohrh.law.ox.ac.uk\/the-two-child-policy-an-assault-on-human-rights\/\"><em>human rights violations<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>of China\u2019s One-Child Policy. Is this being overlooked?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>We also know about the <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/46-million-girls-went-missing-in-india\/article31957348.ece\"><em>disrupted social structures<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>caused by sex-selective abortions. A practice with the potential to cause long-term shifts in the proportions of women and men, thus creating a \u201cmarriage squeeze\u201d as grooms outnumber prospective brides? <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>There are already selective terminations<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/down-syndrome-iceland\/\"><em>\u00a0based on chromosomes<\/em><\/a><em>,<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>such as with Down syndrome. Would this increase it?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>I\u2019m equally concerned that this narrative will cause young women or couples to believe they are selfish if they choose to have children.<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>This false perception could prevent them from embracing each child as a gift.\u00a0I also wonder about the couple who ideologically buys into the idea of one-child planet stewardship, but have a second unexpected pregnancy \u2013\u00a0where does this lead them?<\/p>\n<p>As I was voicing my concerns, a wise friend suggested, \u201cWell, their ads have been quite effective \u2013 they have you talking about this, and don&#8217;t they have the right to put forward these thoughts in a free and democratic country?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Although<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em>I strongly question the concept promoted in the ad, I agree with the need to create space for respectful conversations.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong> It<\/strong><strong> is my prayer that questions will be raised and the potential dangers of this type of messaging be explored and discussed.
